EXHIBITION TEXT DRAFT 1
“The first thing we bought and the last thing we’d sell”
Collecting and keeping items which have meaning to us is something which unites us and our ancestors throughout history. Royal Crown Derby is collected and treasured by many different people across the world. For some it’s because it’s beautiful, for others because it’s rare or valuable, there is no single reason for collecting but there are many collectors.
For some people of Gypsy, Romany and Traveller heritage there has been a long family tradition of collecting Royal Crown Derby. Sometimes it is given as a gift at significant life moments such as marriages or christenings, for others their Royal Crown Derby connects them to family and friends near or far. In some cases a single item is specially treasured for its significance to a family member, for others it is the collection that’s important and the long story of collecting it throughout a lifetime.
Here you can see and hear some of the stories we have collected during the COVID lockdown about what people’s collections mean to them. You can hear how Imari designs have inspired a young artist, and about how a very special plate helped reconnect someone with their family and you can even pick up a tip for teething babies!
We hope you enjoy our ever-expanding archive of stories that people have generously shared.
Do you have Gypsy, Romany or Traveller roots? Do you have a story you would like to share?
